Both the X12 and UN/EDIFACT standards are generic supersets intended to satisfy a broad spectrum of data requirements. Therefore, many organizations have defined their own subsets and designed guidelines that prescribe their permissible data. These EDI subsets, called implementation guides, also address industry- or company-specific EDI implementation issues, and often include explanatory front-matter, figures, examples, and cross-references.
